Fall Preventions Tips for Seniors: Staying Safe at Home

1. Use Nightlights in Bedrooms and Hallways


-nighttime trips to the restroom are common, but they can be dangerous if the path isn't well lit. Place nightlights in the bedroom and along the hallway heading to the bathroom to ensure clear visibility.


2. Use Non-slip Bathroom Mats


-wet surfaces are a major hazard in the bathroom. Placing non-slip mats inside and outside the bathtub or shower can reduce the risk of slipping.


3. Wear Non-Slip Socks


-traditional socks can be slippery on hardwood or tile floors. Invest in non-slip socks that have rubber grips on the soles.


4. Remove Throw Rugs


-although decorative, throw rugs are a common tripping hazard. The edges can catch on shoes or walking aids, leading to a fall.


5. Use a Cane or Walking


-balance can become more challenging with age. A cane or walker can provide the extra stability needed when moving around, especially on uneven surfaces or stairs.
